UC Irvine students will be settling into their new homes – for the next nine months – this weekend before the start of Welcome Week activities and then the new academic year.
On Friday, the mass migration got started with families dropping off their students – and all their things – at the Mesa Court and Middle Earth residences. Chancellor Howard Gilman was there in the morning to help with move-in day, as loads of belongings were carted in.
UC Irvine had about 17,900 beds available to students this year – housing was guaranteed for incoming first-year and transfer students who gave notice before summer they intended to register for the academic year, according to campus officials.
Most of the on-campus housing is undergrad dorms – for about 6,700 students – but more than 3,500 grad students also have housing. Nearly 50% of enrolled students use campus-provided housing.
UCI is breaking ground this month on more Mesa Court housing, adding another 400 future beds, officials said.
